Note: In Charles Davis Daniel “ Heroes of Home Mission - A Man’s Job” - he talked about the stateroom where “Charlie and three of his brothers were to sleep” on their trip to Brazil in 1866.(So, that would include Charles Davis (Charlie) & Joseph Stephen Daniel and two others - “One of his little sisters sat litstless and still.Another sister became ill, and soon both died.”One of these little girls may have been named “Camilla”- there is a Camilla Daniel listed in the Passenger Lists. The loss of their young children took a huge emotional toll on both Joseph and Ann.They noted the moment of each childs expiration -to the minute. They died of smallpox & you could feel their agony at each loss.
The middle name"Haseltine" was adopted at a lter date, it was after a Missionary that was murdered in China and was well respected by Mary Ann Haseltine Harrison and her family.

DEATH AFT 1870
Married: 6 Sep 1846 • Monroe, Alabama, USA

In 1850 Benjamin and Mary Eliszabeth were living in the household of her father, James J. Daniel Sr.
In March of 1866 the Harrison family sailed with his in-laws, the Daniels on the "Margaret", part of the Hastings immigration colony to the Amazon region. The ship had a devestating smallpox outbreak on board, decimating the Daniel family. In the 1860 Federal census in Monroe county Alabama, there is a daughter by the name of Lydia. There is no mention of a daughter by the name of Nancy. Could they possibly be the same person? Nancy is listed on the manifest of the "Margaret". She apparently died young as their is no further mention of her. She could have been one of the casualties of the smallpox outbreak. The Harrisons apparently traveled back ti the United States after a short stay in Brazil and settled with other members of the Daniel family in Navarro County, Texas,

Hi Lois and All:
Mary Ann Key (wife of Hartwell Harrison) died and is buried in the Hamilton-Beeman Cemetery in Corsicana, Navarro Co., TX.The date of her death, if I remember correctly is the same.I belive that she went to TX after the return of her daughter, Mary Ann Haseltine Daniel and her husband Joseph Daniel to the States from Brazil.
I know that my Harrison/Key family information is not as complete as it could be.But, I'm sure that the 1860 AL census that list Hartwell as 36 and Phoebe as 49 is not the correct Hartwell Harrison and Phoebe Talbot Key who was his mother. You are a Key researcher - so you will know that Phobe Talbot, b. 1780 - d. Mar 1822. She was the daughter of Joseph Talbert and Sarah Jennings.I'm not sure who the folks in the census record are - but they are not the Hartwell Harrison who married Mary Ann Key.
By the way we were able to firmly establish & indentify that Mary Ann Harrison who is buried in TX is Mary Ann Key (d. of Henry Key and Phoebe Talbot)by her birth date which is etched on her graves headstone, and thanks to Henry Key keeping such good records in his bible & recorded her birth date.
I've not been able to connect Benjamin Harrison(father of Hartwell) to the 2 Harrison Presidents.Nor to Benjamin "the Signer".It seems like he was in the right place for a connection.Do you have more information?
I'm offering my accounting of this line for your review and would appreciate any comments. My line is through James Daniel and Lydia Davis - parents of Joseph Daniel who m. Mary Ann Haseltine Harrison in Monroe Co., AL & Elizabeth Daniel who m. Benjamin Henry Harrison. We believe that Haseltine was a name adopted by Mary Ann Harrison. She went by Ann H. Harrison prior to her marriage. She had an older sister named Mary Elizabeth that probably went by Mary.

I asked the daughter of James Perry Daniel - Carolyn MacGlormilk “Where did the name “Haseltine” come from. She said it was after a Missionary that was murdered in China and was well respected by Mary Ann Haseltine Harrison and her family.

...When the Southern Baptists began to send missionaries directly from the States, they still managed to tap into the emigre community. Charles D. Daniel and E. A. Puthuff were appointed by the foreign mission board in 1885. Daniel was a native of Monroe County, Alabama, who had lived in Santa Barbara for several years with his father. The family had returned to America after his father's death, but Daniel spoke Portuguese well and had been infected with a romantic attraction to the country. While attending college at Baylor University in Waco, Texas, Daniel converted his best friend, E.A. Puthuff, to the cause of missions.
The two were inseparable, participated together as Masons, and finally settled upon a scheme to return to Santa Barabara together. Daniel would work upon Brazilians, using his Portuguese, and Puthuff, who was already known to the American community in Santa Barbara, would minister to English-speaking settlers. Puthuffmarried Emma Fox of Pickens County, Alabama, and the two couples rejected entreaties that they study for a time in the seminary. Daniel maintained that his fluency in Portuguese would allow him to begin preaching immediately, while Puhuff was already an experienced preacher who would not need language training anyway. A lenient mission board, anxious to respond to pleas for help from Brazil, waived its rule and sent the four missionaries on their ways.
Although they traveled to Brazil on the same boat, their destinations differed. The board sent the Puthuffs to Santa Barbara and had a greater need for the Danielselsewhere. After Daniel brushed up on his Portuguese, he took charge o Baptist work in Pernambuco. He was able to preach extemporaneously in Portuguese and was optimistic about his work in Bahia, even though his wife had preferred to stay in Rio. Almost immediately the Daniels began to request the board to send the Puthuffs to help them, but the agency needed them eleswhere. As a consequence both families slowly became dispirited. Bitter opposition from the Catholic population of Pernambuco turned Daniel into an Anti-Catholic fanatic who filled his correspondence with diatribes against "our Catholic soul, mind, and body murderers." Though their purposes were carefully disguised in America, the real Catholic priesthood lived immorally and corruptly elsewhere. Persecuted and ill, the Daniels finally left for Rio.
After a brief period of recuperation, they began work in Minas Gerais. Daniel beseeched the board to allow him to organize missions in a new way. He proposed an itinerancy scheme whereby he would hire a native worker to help him, establish a church in Sao Paulo, then move to Taubate to begin preaching. Once that work was established, he would leave an unpaid Brazilian overseer in charge and move on to a new station, corresponding with his understudies through sermons and literature.

The plan succeeded no better than his earlier efforts. And he soon began complaining about the lack of support he received from the board compared with that received by the Methodists and Presbyterians, who were conducting their mission work with far better resources and skill.
Like the Daniels, the Puthuff's debts were mounting, their health suffering, and their morale undermined. Conditions in Santa Barbara were worsening, and the mission board had trouble even paying Puthuff's salary. He wrote from the community in January 1888: "I cannot remain here through another year of doubts and uncertainty." The Puthuffsresigned that year. Two years later the Daniels did likewise in a letter in which Daniel grieved. If I had my life to live over again no one could induce me to come to the field until I had taken a thorough literary and theological course ." He had regretted"ten thousand thousand times" bringing his wife and son to Minas Gerais.
