When William Ashmund Prestridge was born on November 5, 1839, in Sumter, Alabama, United States of America, his father, Benjamin Bagley Prestridge, was 22 years old and his mother, Mary Ann Ezell, was 18 years old. He married Victoria C. Mills on October 5, 1865, in Choctaw, Alabama, United States of America. They had at least 2 children. William was a Confederate soldier assigned to the 3rd Alabama Cavalry. The 3rd Cavalry Regiment was formed at Tupelo, Mississippi in June 1862. It was composed of independent companies that had seen previous service, some had fought at Shiloh. These companies were from Monroe, Choctaw, Wilcox, Mobile, Perry, Dallas, Calhoun and Autauga counties. He enlisted on September 25, 1861, at Mount Sterling, Alabama. He was present at all of his regiment's actions, including Shiloh, Murfreesboro, Chickamauga, Atlanta Campaign, and Bentonville, and was paroled in Charlotte, North Carolina, in May 1865. In the book "Soldier Rests" there is also the report that William "was a tall man with a thin body, he had a lot of intelligence and culture. Like so many others like him, he wasted his talent walking all day behind the plow, to support the family ." "His pride of him was the long white beard he so cultivated..."
