ARTHUR MORTIMER HANSON

Arthur was 2nd Lt. Co. C 12th Alabama Infantry, enlisting in Mobile, Alabama. He was transferred to Selma, Alabama, stationed with the Confederate Government Services under the command of Capt. Catesby ap R. Jones and Siam P. Gay - Superintendant. He was a master machinist and was recruited to help make cannons for the Confederate Navy - being more valuable as a cannon maker than serving out in the field.

He was born in Norway and emigrated about 1856 with his father and family to Mobile, Alabama. He married Mary Stromstedt (Stromstedt is listed on the marriage record). - born in Sweden - however, Mary's last name may be Peterson as her brother was Godfrey Peterson. They married in Mobile (August 5, 1862) just two weeks before his father died. Mary made her home with Godfrey during her older years in San Antonio, Texas. He was serving alongside Arthur in the Selma Foundry, where, he too was captured.

Arthur, Mary, and infant Minnie were in Brazil by 1868 as she is mentioned in the diary of Julia L. Keyes "Our Life in Brazil" Arthur died on Christmas Eve 1880 in Itapmirim, Espirito, Brazil. It can be assumed they were part of the Gunter Colony. Minnie would marry Jasper Lafayette Harben, an American CSA veteran in Brazil - leaving Brazilian descendants
Mary would find her way to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where she married again to Dr. Carlos Henry Agnese who was fifteen years younger than her. Two years later, he died, leaving Mary a widow again. Carlos was a dentist and is buried in Philadelphia.

Jasper Lafayette Harben, born in the United States but naturalized Brazilian in 1882, had a long career in Brazil. He was a public teacher qualified by the board of directors of the court's Public Instruction, administered the periodicals Brazil and Diario do Brazil, taught at the Industrial School and the Sociedade Auxiliadora da Indústria Nacional, and directed the Externato Jasper from 1870 to 1882 (Oliveira, 2008).

During the period in which he was director of the periodical Brazil and, soon after, of the Diario do Brazil, he publicized his school, the Externato Jasper, and seems to have been successful in disseminating, because, according to the professor's own reports, his establishment was the most successful and with the largest number of students in the whole empire. In 1878, Jasper released the book Prosodia ingleza, which was widely published in the newspapers he directed. In the preface of the work, the author highlighted the commercial objective for the teaching of the English language, emphasizing the need to work with moral values so that the youth could be well educated. Jasper considered himself to have been successful in his fight for education and pointed out that in his eight-year career as a teacher, the results of his teaching could be expressed in the success achieved by the students. "Ahi is your alumni; some, teaching; hundreds of them, employed in commerce; and many others in the Scholastic class, to attest to his dedication to the magisterium" (Harben, 1878, p. i).

Below is an article from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania - It is curious that Minnie shows her last name as Vigneau.

A graduation night romance ended.
Jasper L. Harben was graduated a few years ago from West Point. On graduation night, Mr. Harben met Miss Minnie L. Vigneau and the acquaintanceship there formed ripened into love. Mr. Harben was very highly connected. He occupied a position in the American Consulate in Rio de Janeiro and subsequently opened an American business college in that city and in a short time secured 300 students. Miss Vigneau then went to South America and was married to Mr. Harbin. A child was born, and for two years the couple lived happily. On November 17th, 1883, a summons and complaint in a suit for absolute divorce was served on Mr. Harben and a suit began on the grounds of alleged infidelity. A schoolteacher in Rio was the co-respondent in the suit, but charges were denied by Mr. Harbin and the suit is still pending.
