Unmasking Mysterious Woman Detective Reveals She is Protege of Underwood

Washington, March 18 - In the unmasking of the mysterious "Mary King," a detective for Lieutenant Mina Van Winkle, of the woman's bureau of the police department, it has been found that she is a protege of Senator Oscar W. Underwood, of Alabama. It was through the request of Senator Underwood that she be allowed by special dispensation to take her Civil Service examination. This was done while she was an unnaturalized citizen.

"Mysterious Mary," although she had been a Washington "coppette" in good standing since 1923, is not an American citizen. She unmasked herself and revealed her alien citizenship when she applied for final citizenship papers. She gave her name as Miss Nainette King Jones Adams, born in Brazil of American parents, and she said that she sometimes used the alias "Mary King" in her capacity as a female guardian of the Capitol's peace and morals.
Major Edwin B. Hesse, Superintendent of Police wanted to know how "Mysterious Mary" could take the of office, in which she had to sweat that she was a United States citizen, while remaining a citizen of Brazil, because her father became a naturalized Brazilian when she was 15.

Major Hesse said that when she took the oath of office in 1923, and again in 1924 after she was re0installed following her resignation, she swore that she was an American citizen. The police head added that it was an unfailing rule of the department that all policemen and police women be naturalized Americans.

Miss Adams said she received special dispensation to take her Civil Service Examinations at the request of Senator Underwood. She said that after the dispensation she considered it was all right to take the oath. Now she is a detective on the force and said to be a clever one, so it was through the influence of Senator Underwood that she is.

Gator Cagers May Make Lengthy Trip In South America

Gainsville, Feb. 18 - Negotiations are under way between the University of Florida and the South American Federation of basketball for a three month tour by the Florida team of Argentine, Brazil, Chile, Peru and Uruguay.

In announcing this today, University officials said arrangements for this tour were largely begun separatly by Dr. C. B. Jones, resident physician of the University, following an invitation from South America. The invitation, it was said, grew out of a casual conversation some months ago when Dr. Jones was stationed in Brazil.

Dr. C.B. Jones

Loss of Dr. C.B. Jones is one which all New Smyrna Beach feels keenly. Dr. Jones, who died Friday, had served the community as a physician, a mayor and in many other ways.

He established a practice there in 1931 and for 35 years ministered to the sick and brought babies into the world. He was the prototype of the kindly country doctor and he had friends in all walks of life and from all races, creeds and colors.

"Doc" Jones was a financial success but money was never an overriding factor with him and many a fee was paid in fish, game and produce when times were lean for his patients. He later became a political rarity, a public officeholder with no enemies.
New Smyrna Beach will close its city hall Monday, in observance of his death. It is a loss the community will feel deeply and for a log time.
