With Captain Spencer. Right Was Right. There Was No Halfway Ground.
However, having a love of adventure and having heard alluring stories of opportunities for highly remunerative employment in South America, he took passage on a steamship bound for Brazil to make a personal investigation. On the ship. he became acquainted with Dr. John W. Keyes, a wealthy dentist who owned a large sugar plantation and refinery near Rio de Janeiro. They became friends and Dr. Keyes offered young Spencer (he was then 18 years old, husky and well-developed) the job of superintendent of the plantation and a home with the Keyes family. The arrangement continued for three years when Dr. Keyes decided to dispose of his interest in Brazil, locate in Florida and engage in citrus and pecan culture. He planted extensive orchards near Wewachitka. Mr. Spencer also planted groves, and they produced bountifully until the great freeze of 1895 destroyed them.
In 1872, Mr. Spencer married Miss Mary A. Farley of Marianna, and soon after their first child was born, they and another young couple, equally imbued with the love of adventure, made a trip to Texas in covered wagons and on their return, five years later, they had many wonderful experiences to relate. While the groves were being brought to production, Mr. Spencer had employment as an engineer on riverboats and later in government service in River and Harbor work. He served his first term as a member of the legislature in 1887. He was elected for his second term four years later. Wewahitchka was then in Calhoun County, now it is in Gulf County.
During his absence in these employments, the groves were capably managed by Mrs. Spencer. In the river work, he was associated with many prominent engineers, and later he was placed in charge of the work on the Chipola River. Captain Spencer died in 1919.
The youngest daughter of Captain and Mrs. Spencer, Mrs. Grace Spencer Helm, Jr, is a resident of Clearwater after residence in Richmond, Virginia, for 26 years, where her husband was employed by the State government as an accountant. They bought a home in Clearwater because their son resides near that city and they desired to be near him. Mrs. Helm has had training in vocal music, piano, and literature and has published a volume of poetry. But her greatest pride is in the achievements of her father. If anyone ever deserved to be designated a self-made man, he did, she declares. And above all, his faith in God and the holy teachings were absolute. A friend who had known him for many years expressed his judgment in this emphatic manner to Captain Spencer. Right as right and wrong as wrong. There is no halfway ground with him.
Mrs. Helm had her primary education in local schools, then attended Florida State University in Tallahassee for two years. Next, she entered La Grange Female College, La Grange, Georgia for voice and piano instruction. She has hobbies too. She is a nature lover, particularly of birds, and she has for many years clipped and preserved interesting articles from magazines and newspapers and had a large number of scrapbooks.
Mrs. Helm loved to talk of her father and his colorful and adventure-filled life, and she always stressed his unwavering faith in the Supreme being. The name of Wewahitchka was given the place by the Indians. It means water eyes and was so named because of the two beautiful lakes near it, identical in size, perfectly round in shape, and connected by a small stream. The lakes were named for the twin daughters of Dr. Keyes, Julia and Alice.
Captain Thomas Spencer, though not a native, was a citizen of Florida for many years and that he was highly esteemed by the people among whom he spent his mature years is evidenced by the fact that they sent him to the state legislature for two terms as their representative.
And in that period. Christian character, notable wisdom, and demonstrated interest in and dedication to the welfare of the people were basic requirements of candidates for public office.
When a child he was orphaned by the death of both parents during a yellow fever epidemic in New Orleans, about 1856. He was then seven years of age. Friends of the family took him into their home and gave him good training. While yet a stripling, through the kindly influence of Captain John Dawson, a neighbor and friend of his parents before they died, he secured employment on a Mississippi River steamboat, running from New Orleans to Saint Louis. He had selected the profession of marine engineer as his life vocation. By diligent application, h soon qualified for a license.

WA Farley & wife Martha moved from Marianna, FL to St. Andrews Bay (now Panama City, FL) in 1867. They did not live at/near Apalachicola. They built a home in 1867 that still stands today? I am a vol local history researcher @ Bay Co. and have researched the former "Farley place" and the history of the family. I completed the research file about 6 yrs ago. At that time, could only locate one family descendant on ancestry.com. WA Farley, his brother James & s/o James each fought at the Battle of Marianna - which was a seminal event during the last days of the Civil War. The battle waged by Federal troops against the citizens of Marianna at the St. Luke's Churchyard was very instrumental in making the FL State Capitol the only southern capital not captured by the Federals in the course of that war. WA Farley was captured during that battle and was being force-marched to the Federal Prison Camp @ Elmyra, NY. He managed to escape & returned back to Marianna & to his family. Almost none of the others who were taken to Elmyra lived.
The Farleys built a two-story house, out bldgs, dock, and planted an orange grove at St. Andrews Bay. When his ship "The Mental" was overturned on Saturday, April 16, 1870, while trying to re-enter St. Andrews Bay during a violent storm, 3 of the four men aboard (WA Farley, John E. Martin, AB Luce & John R. Purcell) were all swept out to sea. Only JR Purcell lived. Search parties scoured the local waters & shores for weeks but the bodies of the three missing men were never found. Eight months later, on December 25, 1870 (what would have been the 52nd b'day of WA Farley), widowed Mrs. Martha Farley gave birth to her 8th child - son Wm. Augustus Farley Jr.

Undemocratic, Mr. Spencer
Thomas Spencer, one of Calvin County's candidates for state senator, had been making a canvass of Washington County during the past week. It is reliably reported that he states that if elected, he will not abide by the wishes of the voters of this county if they decide for county division through electing Howell, who is running on that issue.
Mr. Spencer appears to be an autocrat in a political way. He recognizes no power, but his unbridled will through his refusal to obey the expressed wish of the majority. He places himself outside the realm of democracy and announces himself for one supreme power. Either democracy must change its fundamental principles or Mr. Spencer must be turned down. Which will it be?
This is the same Mr. Spencer who, when last in the legislature from Calhoun County succeeded in annexing the four eastern townships of Washington County to Calhoun. Let the voters of Washington County bear this in mind.

Find A Grave
Frances Helm (October 14, 1923 - December 30, 2006)[1] was an American stage, film, and television actress whose performing career spanned nearly fifty years.
She was born Mary Frances Helm in Panama City, Florida. Her parents were Thomas William Helm II and Grace Spencer. Her father started as a bookkeeper for the railroad industry and then became an accountant for the state of Virginia, moving the family to Richmond when Helm was very young. She had one older brother. Helm graduated from J. A. C. Chandler Junior High School in June 1937. She graduated from John Marshall High School in June 1940. From the age of ten Helm took piano and voice lessons. Later she studied with Mary Barbour Dixon, who would remain her drama teacher and coach all through secondary school and college. Helm attended the Richmond Professional Institute (RPI) from Fall 1940 through Spring 1942, majoring in Speech and Dramatics. Helm was a member of RPI's Theater Associates, which mounted productions at the school using students and the occasional visiting professional actor. Helm and other RPI drama students also did broadcasts of play readings on the school's radio station. While at the school, Helm dropped her first name for stage billing.
During her last term at RPI, her brother returned to Richmond after being wounded at Pearl Harbor. A Radioman 2/C in the USN, Thomas W. Helm had kept firing an antiaircraft gun during the attack despite being severely wounded; the Navy credited him with bringing down a Japanese aircraft. Invalided out of the service in April 1942, he was used for recruiting and bond drives, with his sister accompanying him. She was pictured at Red Cross events and dances with her brother and other servicemen. Frances Helm also joined other volunteer actors to perform a parody of an old-fashioned melodrama, Ten Nights in a Bar-Room, at military bases in Virginia and Maryland.
Helm married Robert Alba Keith on January 3, 1948, in Richmond. They were in Mister Roberts for eighteen months, did at least one television episode together, but separated on July 28, 1953. On December 8, 1954, Helm charged Keith with "introducing another woman as his wife", without naming her. Newspapers reported in January 1955 that Keith had already obtained a Mexican divorce six months earlier and remarried to dancer Judy Landon. At a settlement hearing, Helm agreed to accept the divorce and receive $250 monthly alimony from Keith. However, a few weeks later the alimony was set aside on a "quirk" of California law wherein only the party filing for divorce could claim alimony.
In April 1963 Helm married Walter C. Wallace, a former assistant Secretary of Labor in the Eisenhower administration. He was the personnel director for a New York paper company. The couple had one child, a daughter Laura Wallace, born in late spring 1964.
They remained married until Helm's death in 2006. According to her obituary in Variety, Helm was a long-time member of The Player's Club and had served on its board of directors.

Brian Keith
Actor. Born in Bayonne, New Jersey, he was the son of actor Robert Keith and actress Helena Shipman. He grew up on the road with his parents, who toured in plays. His first film was in 1924 at age 3 in "Pied Piper Malone". His parents divorced and his father went to Hollywood and started his television and movie career. His mother continued to do stage and radio and her mother and grandmother helped to raise him on Long Island. He read at a very early age and he was reading books way beyond his age level. He acted in radio programs and on stage. He worked as an extra in several films before speaking roles and subsequent stardom. He joined the Marines and was a machine gunner. He served from 1941-45. He was awarded the Air Navy Medal. He then returned to New York and started his acting career on Broadway with plays, like "Mr. Roberts" and "The Moon Is Blue".
His biggest break came in 1966 when he landed the role of "Uncle Bill" on the popular television situation comedy "Family Affair", a role which garnered him three Emmy nominations for Best Actor. The show made him a household name. He went on to star in such television series as "The Brian Keith Show", "Heartland", and "Hardcastle and McCormick". He also made over 60 movies in his career. He married three times, first to Frances Helm, then in 1955 to Judith Landon, and finally in 1970 to Hawaiian actress Victoria Young. He fathered a total of four children, but also adopted three others with Judith Landon. His first son died in childhood. One of his children with Victoria Young was Daisy Keith, who also became an actress, appearing with her father in the short-lived series "Heartland" in 1989. During the later part of his life, he suffered from emphysema and lung cancer. He was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound at the age of 75. He is buried next to his daughter Daisy, who also committed suicide just 2 months earlier.
